In Amaekpu community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, the daughters of the land, known as Umuada, reportedly disciplined a man accused of repeatedly beating his elderly parents.

According to reports, the man was given 30 strokes of the cane as punishment, in line with local customs and traditional enforcement practices. The action followed allegations that he had persistently assaulted both his mother and father.

Community members said the Umuada stepped in after the repeated abuse, aiming to protect the elderly couple and restore order within the family. The intervention was also meant to reinforce respect for elders and warn others against similar behaviour.

The incident highlights the role traditional groups such as the Umuada continue to play in maintaining discipline and addressing domestic issues in some communities, especially where formal law enforcement may not respond immediately.

By publicly administering the punishment, the daughters of Amaekpu sent a strong message that abuse of parents would not be tolerated and that accountability remains a shared community responsibility
