Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has accepted responsibility for his mistake that led to Zimbabwe’s late equaliser in Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

Victor Osimhen had put Nigeria ahead in the 74th minute after converting a cross from Ola Aina. However, Zimbabwe equalised in stoppage time when Tawanda Chirewa dribbled past Troost-Ekong and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Following criticism on social media, Troost-Ekong took to X to acknowledge his mistake, writing: “Responsibility taken. Same target ahead. We will do it together! Nigeria Super Eagles.”

The result leaves Nigeria in fourth place in Group C with six points, putting their qualification hopes in jeopardy as they trail group leaders South Africa.
