Senate President Godswill Akpabio has addressed the increase in allocations being received by state governors under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to Akpabio, current governors now get roughly four times the funds that were available during his tenure as governor.

Speaking during plenary on Thursday, the former Akwa Ibom governor noted that the increase in resources gives governors more capacity to implement development projects and reach communities at the grassroots level.

Akpabio also expressed hope that the governors will have the wisdom and ability to use the extra funds effectively while fulfilling their responsibilities to their states.

The lawmaker also reflected on the changes with a sense of admiration for the opportunities current governors now have, saying that with more resources, there is greater potential for state development compared to his time in office.

He said: “I wish I was a governor under you. Most of them are saying they collect 4 times what we used to collect. So I can’t go back, I can’t do a change in the constitution.

“Because they have far more money to develop their states and to touch the grassroots for you than we had. And I pray that God will give them the enablement and the wisdom to also do what they are doing at the same time.”
