A faith-based organisation in Abuja, Holiness Revival Movement Worldwide, has expelled a newly married woman following a prolonged marital dispute, sparking public debate about consent, religion, and mental health.
The couple, identified as Isaac and Oyiza, married in September 2025 after completing traditional and court marriage ceremonies. Reports indicate tensions arose almost immediately, with the wife stating she did not feel emotionally connected to her husband and was uncomfortable with physical intimacy.
Despite multiple counselling sessions involving family members and church leaders, the issues were not resolved. During a public service, the church’s international director, Paul Rika, announced the woman’s expulsion, citing spiritual concerns and alleging misconduct.
The decision has generated widespread criticism online, with members of the public and rights advocates questioning the church’s approach to personal and marital matters, particularly regarding consent and mental well-being.
