A concerned Nigerian man has raised alarm over the neglect of almajiri children in the northern region, highlighting the stark contrast between the care given to livestock and the lack of attention paid to children’s welfare.
The man’s statement underscores his frustration with a system in which children are sent to the streets to beg and learn under the almajiri system, while basic needs such as food, safety, and shelter are often ignored.
He criticized the mindset of parents who invest resources and care into animals yet overlook the welfare of their own children.
He lamented the situation, saying: “It’s only in the North that you’ll find someone who goes to the market to buy a goat, provides shelter and feeds the goat properly, but has children outside on the streets doing almajiri. How those children feed, he does not know. Where they sleep, he doesn’t know. Whether they are safe or not, yet he expects them to turn out well.”
