Senator Ali Ndume has strongly criticized the recent hike in electricity tariffs, describing it as unfair and unconstitutional.

Speaking passionately, the senator expressed anger over what he called discrimination in the electricity billing system, particularly the categorization of consumers into Bands A, B, and C. According to him, the sudden increase in tariffs has worsened the suffering of Nigerians who are already struggling with economic hardship.

Ndume accused the Minister of Power of acting arbitrarily, saying the tariff hike was carried out as though the electricity sector were a personal enterprise. He stressed that public officials have a duty to protect citizens and speak out when policies negatively affect the people.

“Don’t tell me to sit down, the people are suffering. There is a sudden hike in the electricity tariff. The whole Band A, B, C is discrimination and it’s against the constitution. The minister of power is just hiking the tariff as if he owns the company. We have a responsibility of calling people to order,” he said.

His comments have added to the growing public debate over electricity costs and the impact of rising tariffs on ordinary Nigerians.
