Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has opened up about the escalating tension between him and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, revealing that their rift centers on a fundamental disagreement over the 2027 general elections and the survival of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a candid address, Makinde traced his personal success back to the late 1990s to emphasize that his political journey is not driven by financial desperation.
Makinde recalled that his company, Makon, secured its first major contract from Mobil in 1997 when he was just 29 years old. Within a year, he had earned $1 million.
“At 29 when I made $1 million, Wike was just finishing Law school. He later went on to become a local government chairman. I am not looking for what to eat; I am looking for a better Nigeria,” Makinde declared.
According to the Governor, the “real issue” began during a high-level meeting involving President Bola Tinubu, Wike, and the President’s Chief of Staff. During the session, Wike reportedly made a bold commitment to the President regarding the next election cycle.
“Wike told the President, ‘Well sir, I’ll hold PDP for you in this 2027.’ I was shocked. The President didn’t even ask for such a commitment,” Makinde revealed.
Makinde stated that he confronted Wike privately after the meeting, questioning if there had been any collective agreement to surrender the PDP’s interests to the ruling APC for 2027.
