The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has been thrown into mourning following the tragic loss of four of its staff members in the recent fire incident at Afriland Towers, Broad Street, Lagos.
The victims identified are George Faith Ekelikhotse, Sunday-Jatto David, Faramaye Peter, and Onyemelukwe Nkem, all of whom were stationed at the Lagos Island office of FIRS.
According to the agency, the fire outbreak occurred on Tuesday, engulfing the sixth and seventh floors of Afriland Towers, where the Medium Tax Audit and Onikan Emerging Tax Offices are located. FIRS disclosed that its Security and Safety officials quickly mobilized and contacted emergency services, but by the time responders arrived, thick smoke had already overtaken the building.
In a statement, FIRS expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved families, describing the deceased as exemplary professionals whose dedication to duty will be greatly missed. The management further assured that it would remain in close contact with the families to provide every necessary support during this difficult period.
Additionally, the agency emphasized that it is reviewing and strengthening safety measures across all its offices nationwide—both rented and owned—to ensure the protection of its workforce.
The tragic incident has sparked an outpouring of grief within the FIRS community and beyond, as colleagues and Nigerians mourn the untimely passing of the four staff members.
